Vaishnavism as Fine Literature

The focus of the conference is the intersection between the religion of Vaishnavism on the one hand and the conventions of fine literature and aesthetic theory in Sanskrit and South Asian vernaculars on the other. While there has been a growing scholarly production concerning this intersection, mostly focused on the tradition following the Bengali cultural hero Chaitanya, the purpose of the conference is to map the broader contours of the field in terms of the “Religion and Literature” approach.
Some of the questions that participants in the conference will consider include:

Ethics of Knowledge-Making: Race, Genomics, and Society

Revolution of Our Times

Over the past fifty years, Hongkongers have fought for freedom and democracy but have yet to succeed. In 2019, the “Extradition Bill” to China opened Pandora’s box, turning Hong Kong into a battlefield against the Chinese authoritarian rule. The award-winning director of “Ten Years: Self Immolator,” Kiwi Chow, made this documentary to tell the story of the movement, both with a macro view of its historical context and up close and personal on the front lines.

SASC Special lecture: The Perverse Impacts of Electoral Laws on India’s Political Economy, Rajeev Gowda

Political parties and campaigns require significant resources to be effective. India has developed complex election expenditures, political party funding, and reporting and disclosure laws. These laws have perverse impacts on the electoral system: they drive campaign expenditure underground and foster reliance on unaccounted funds or ‘‘black money.’’ This leads to adverse selection, where those able to work with black money dominate politics, and triggers pervasive corruption. Innovative financing methods such as Electoral Bonds also have serious flaws.

Art Against Time: A lecture by Chair and Professor of Art History at UCLA Saloni Mathur

Join Artspace New Haven and Yale University’s Department of the History of Art for a lecture, Art Against Time, by Chair and Professor of Art History at UCLA Saloni Mathur. Temporal constructs have long had a chokehold on the discipline of art history and its periodizing narratives. This talk will investigate the enduring legacy of evolutionary chronologies and linear thinking in relation to the visual arts, and explore the way in which disruption, anachronism, and out of sequence storylines can provide new points of entry and possible frameworks for renewal.

#MeToo in Japan, Britney Spears, BTS

The presentation is regarding BTS, Britney Spears, and the #MeToo movement in Japan. Since BTS and Britney Spears are two notable things I encountered in Los Angeles, I would like to discuss these subjects from a journalistic point of view; how we are influenced by society’s underlying gender bias.
The three topics may seem unrelated.
However, through the perspective of “Toxic Masculinity” which is associated with “suppressing emotions or “maintaining an appearance of hardness” and using “violence as an indicator of power”, these topics are strongly related.
