VIRTUAL: “The Machine Stops” Book Club Discussion

The genre of science fiction often serves as a warning. If we ignore the failures of these fictional societies, then we are doomed to make the same mistakes.

Written in 1909, E. M. Forster’s short story eerily predicts the events of today. It describes a world in which humans live isolated in individual rooms, connected only through video and audio calls. What does Forster’s virtual society say about our own? What lessons can we learn from the world of the Machine?

VIRTUAL: Racial Equity Workshop

Join FLY and YAAA for an interactive workshop lead by Dr. Janice Z. Gassam Asare. Topics will include racial equity, systemic and structural issues that impact unconscious bias and micro-aggressions. The workshop will be comprised of an interactive presentation where attendees are invited to participate in different discussions aimed at better understanding. Scholarly sources and empirical research will be used to support the workshop.

Good Society Forum: God and the Good Society: Spirituality in a Time of Pandemic

The global pandemic has forced us to not only examine what makes a good society, but what makes a good life. The pandemic has made us conscious - as if we needed any reminders - of the incredible gaps between privilege and poverty, wealth and marginalization. Social justice, or the lack thereof, has been a major factor in the way people have experienced this time. Faith leaders, religious institutions and activists moved by their spirituality have been at the forefront of confronting these inequalities and deep social fissures.

VIRTUAL: WWN Parenting Check-In

Join the July Parenting Check-in sessions on July 15 and July 29 at 1:30 via Zoom. The check-in will serve as an opportunity for Yale community parents to check-in, share tips and tricks and concerns about our new normal of being parent(s), continued work responsibilities, and now the additional responsibility of homeschooling and managing the nuances of having babies and toddlers at home instead of daycare. The conversation will be a safe space for us to positively communicate and learn and grow from each other.
