New Haven’s Closet: 400 Years of Queer History in the Elm City

The New Haven Museum will host, “New Haven’s Closet: 400 Years of Queer History in the Elm City” with LGBTQ+ historian John D. Allen on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at 6 p.m., preceded by a reception at 5:30 p.m., in collaboration with New Haven Pride Center. Mondays at Beinecke: The Art of Listening: Testimony-Centered Teaching Practices from the Fortunoff Video Archive

The Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies emerged from a grassroots effort of survivors in the New Haven area to document their stories on video, starting in the late 1970s. The archive’s origins in the survivor community led to the development of an interview method that centers the voice of the witness. This conversation will focus on how the Fortunoff Archive’s ethos and interview methodology shape its current work with educators.

What does it mean to be an American? Two immigrants embark on a cross-country listening and recording tour, revealing an unfiltered, unflinching portrait of America.
