Kumu Hina Virtual Screening & Discussion

Join the LGBTQ Affinity Group and Asian Network at Yale for a virtual screening and discussion of Kumu Hina, a powerful feature documentary about the struggle to maintain Pacific Islander culture and values within the Westernized society of modern day Hawaii. It is told through the lens of an extraordinary Native Hawaiian who is both a proud and confident māhū, or transgender woman, and an honored and respected kumu, or teacher, cultural practitioner, and community leader.

Mondays at Beinecke: Robert Giard Photographs with Jonathan Silin

Jonathan Silin will discuss the work of American photographer Robert Giard, renowned for his portraits of American poets and writers. Giard’s particular focus was on gay and lesbian writers. Some of his photographs of the American gay and lesbian literary community appear in his groundbreaking book Particular Voices: Portraits of Gay and Lesbian Writers, published by MIT Press in 1997.

Juneteenth Day: "Visions of Our Future" Virtual Performances

Join us on Juneteenth for the “Visions of Our Future” virtual performances. The artists performing will be M’Bosse Dance Company of Senegal and Keepers of the Culture Performing Arts Company with music by Elder Brian Jarawa Gray, Antwain Johnson, Jr. as Fred Hampton, and the Rahsaan Langley Project. This event will be hosted by Hanan Hameen, Co-Founder of the Official Juneteenth Coalition of Greater New Haven.

Juneteenth Opening Ceremony, Elder Honoring, and Mantle Award

The Juneteenth Opening Ceremony will include messages by Mayor Justin Elicker and Elder Byron Breland, as well as performances by Dr. Karima Robinson as Ida B. Wells, Keepers of the Culture Performing Arts Company, singer Lucitta Odyce Adger, artist/poet Shaunda Holloway, and singers Pamela Campbell and son, Gabriel Abdul-Kareem. The event will be hosted by Chaz Carmon, Hanan Hameen, and Tennille Murphy of the Official Juneteenth Coalition of Greater New Haven.
