Experience the enduring power of storytelling by participating in this annual tradition of honoring Dr. King through stories and song. Learn about and engage with his legacy through fables and a captivating program the whole family can enjoy. Featuring Clifton Graves (Chicken and the Eagle, The Creation), Joy Donaldson (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Word), and Waltrina Kirkland-Mullins. Dr. Robbie Thomas will also join us for a reading of her children’s book “Mommy, Why Am I Different?”

VIRTUAL: 25th Annual MLK Celebration: Open Mic and Poetry Jam in honor of Zanette Lewis

Join us for a reimagined Open Mic and Poetry Jam celebrating Dr. King through verse and spoken word. Hosted by Ngoma Hill and Croilot Semexan, this year’s event will honor Zanette Lewis who planted the seeds from which this signature program has grown.

The Open Mic will begin at 6pm and be followed by a tribute to Zanette Lewis featuring our hosts and a phenomenal line up of internationally recognized artists, including Taalam Acey, Roger Bonair Agard, Lyvonne Proverbs Briggs, Jessica Care Moore, Aaron Jafferis, and Sunni Patterson.

VIRTUAL: 25th Annual MLK Celebration: Birds in Your Backyard--A Collections Tour of Winter CT Birds

Curious about the winter birds you see outside your window? Join Museum staff from our Vertebrate Zoology Division and Education Department to learn about the native bird species you can find in your backyard this
season. Three of our experts will take you on a guided, behind-the-scenes tour through one of the country’s richest bird collections.

VIRTUAL: 25th Annual MLK Celebration: Welcome and Opening Reflections

Join the visionary and founding members of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy of Social and Environmental Justice as they welcome the community to this year’s virtual festival and offer a brief history of the event.

Following their introduction, we’ll host a roundtable discussion focused on the arts in movement building and organizing for climate justice and racial equity.

Mondays at Beinecke: The Million Book Project with Reginald Dwayne Betts

The Million Book Project will bring curated 500-book literary time-capsules to 1,000 prisons and juvenile detention centers to each state in the United States. The Million Book Project, was conceptualized by poet and legal scholar Reginald Dwayne Betts, who serves as its project director.
