Gallery Talk, Power Figures: Exploring Representations of Power in American and African Art

Kern Samuel, a Wurtele Gallery Teacher and an M.F.A. candidate in Painting and Printmaking, Yale School of Art, explores issues of power and cultural history in three objects in the Gallery’s collection: an African power figure (Nkisi N’kondi; early 20th century), John Trumbull’s George Washington at Trenton (1792), and Titus Kaphar’s Shadows of Liberty (2016). Space is limited.

Join us for drop-in, art-inspired mindfulness sessions facilitated by Anne Dutton, Director of Mindfulness Education, Yale Stress Center, and Danielle Casioppo, Health Educator, Being Well at Yale. Each session includes a mindfulness practice and discussion of a carefully selected artwork from the Gallery’s collection. Chairs will be provided; no yoga mats or special clothing needed. Suitable for all levels.

Women of Yale Lecture Series: Art and Disruption

Quiara Alegría Hudes is a playwright and author originally from West Philly with roots in Boriken. Her play Water by the Spoonful won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Her Tony-winning Broadway musical In the Heights, written with Lin-Manuel Miranda, will soon be a major motion picture, adapted for the screen by Hudes. Together with her cousin Sean, Hudes cofounded Emancipated Stories, so people behind bars can share one page of their life story with those on the “outside.” See all the Emancipated Stories on Instagram at @emancipated_stories_project.

Dr. King and the African American Freedom Movement 

Select highlights of the Beinecke Library’s collections related to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and to the African American freedom movement will be on public view in a temporary display for the holiday in the courtyard level reading room.
NOTE: all visitors who go to the reading room will need to check any and all bags, coats, hats, and other personal belongings on the library’s ground floor before going to the reading room. Space may be limited. Last admission at 3:30 pm, and the building will be closed at 4 pm.

Video against AIDS (1989) Screening

As part of the Gallery’s observance of the 30th annual Day With(out) Art, the Yale University Art Gallery will be screening the newly digitized Video against AIDS (1989), a compilation that explores the personal and political issues surrounding the AIDS epidemic, in the Gallery’s McNeil Lecture Hall on Thursday, December 5 from 10 am to 3 pm. Produced by artists, activists, and people living with AIDS, these videos were created to build awareness around the AIDS crisis for the mainstream public.

Moderated Discussion | Looking Back at 50 Years of Change in the Visual Arts

On the fiftieth anniversary of African American Studies at Yale, this panel brings together School of Art alumni Howardena Pindell (Yale MFA 1967), Wangechi Mutu (Yale MFA 2000), and Kevin Beasley (Yale MFA 2005) with Kobena Mercer, Professor of African American Studies and History of Art, to reflect on changing perceptions of black visual arts since 1969 and to share views on how to ensure an inclusive global art world for the future.
