Onitsha Market Literature—named after a city east of the Niger River—emerged in the early 1950s. The popular pamphlet style soon spread to other centers throughout the then British colony of Nigeria. These ephemeral publications circulated widely throughout the busy marketplace, and writers intended them to be both educating and entertaining for the common people.

Join us for an inspiring conversation with Belal Fadl, one of the Arab world’s most brilliant intellectuals, writers, screenwriters, and journalists.
Born in Cairo and raised in Alexandria, Belal Fadl has built a distinguished career in journalism and has become a leading screenwriter, achieved 16 box office hits and winning a Best Screenplay Award at Egypt’s National Film Festival. His literary achievements include 20 books and a critically acclaimed novel Um Mimi, Mother of Mimi, which was long listed for the Arab Booker Prize in 2022.
