In Almost Futures: Sovereignty and Refuge (UC Press, 2024), I question practices of sovereignty at the heart of modern understandings of what it means to be human in a history imagined as moving ever closer to human mastery at its end. If colonialism and imperialism subjugate others by treating them as less than human in this progressive historiography, nationalist and liberation movements have sought to reverse such dialectics, yet stayed well within this understanding of the human defined by sovereignty.

Maadathy, an Unfairy Tale and Conversation with the Filmmaker

This is the tale of an adolescent girl who grew up in an “unseeable” Dalit caste group in southern India whose forced occupation is to wash clothes of other Dalits, the dead, and menstruating women. She transcends her lot and becomes immortalised as their local deity, Maadathy.

Chinese Immigration Story Time

Join Yale Repertory Theatre for a special story time and kite-making activity. We will be reading Paper Son: The Inspiring Story of Tyrus Wong, Immigrant and Artist by Julie Leung and Chris Sasaki, which tells the story of Chinese-American illustrator and kite-maker Tyrus Wong. Inspired by Wong’s work as a kite-maker, each child will get a chance to construct and take home their own paper kite.

Youth Stories: Sounds of New Haven

Teens and their families are invited to participate in an activity where they create art related to the sounds of the Dixwell neighborhood and New Haven more broadly. This program is led by the Curatorial Fellows, Marquita Flowers and Clare Patrick, and is inspired by their exhibition, To Echo a Shadow.
