Event description:

michelle hyun kim’s talk will explore how contemporary pop artists across the Asian diaspora reflect on shared experiences of alienation and colonial trauma by making music unbound by conventional notions of genre. By pulling from musical lineages of both their homeland and adopted land, artists like the Japanese American pop icon Hikaru Utada, Singaporean British electronic experimenter Yeule, Indian American R&B singer Raveena, and Filipino Canadian kulintang quintet Pantayo forge sonic realms that reconcile their fractured identities. Through projects that evoke fantastical spaces of play and exploration, these artists self-make worlds based on principles of connection and community building, creating new possibilities for Asian diasporic identity.
