Join us for a conversation about “ekphrasis,” the practice of describing images using words. While observing and discussing Hero and Leander by the Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640), we will read a poem that the Italian author Giambattista Marino (1569–1625) wrote based on his firsthand study of the canvas. This program approaches looking and writing as complementary processes. Participants are invited to contribute a new, collaborative poetic response to Rubens’s painting. The event is led by two translators of Marino’s poems into English, Alejandro Octavio Nodarse, B.A. and M.A. 2019, Ph.D. candidate in the History of Art and Architecture at Harvard University, and Sara Petrilli-Jones, B.A. 2017, Ph.D. candidate in the History of Art at Yale University and the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and J.D. candidate at Yale Law School.
