Since it was published in 2015, Between the World and Me has represented the consistency of art as a form of resistance. The nonfiction book was written as a letter to Coates’ teenage son, recounting the author’s experiences growing up in Baltimore’s inner city and his growing fear of daily violence against the Black community. The narrative explores Coates’ bold notion that American society structurally supports white supremacy.

On November 21 at 8 pm, HBO premieres its special adaptation of Coates’ celebrated narrative by combining elements of the Apollo Theater’s 2018 adaptation and staging of the book with powerful readings from Coates’ book itself, and documentary footage from the actors’ home life, archival footage and animation. The Yale Schwarzman Center (YSC) invites you to view the premiere as a buildup to HBO’s Between the World and Me Podcast and panel discussion.

HBO’s Between the World and Me Podcast
The four-part podcast is set to begin on November 23, and the Yale Schwarzman Center is pleased to participate in the episode premiering on December 14.

Between the World and Me Panel Discussion
The YSC is also participating in a panel discussion on Between the World and Me, which will be available on HBO and HBO Max. Date and time to be announced soon.
