Yale School of Medicine (YSM) invites you to attend two events to honor the legacy of Yan Fuqing, MD, Class of 1909. He was the first Asian to receive a doctorate of medicine from YSM.
Dr. Yan was a medical practitioner, public health advocate, civil servant, and educator. Upon his graduation from YSM, he returned to China and became the founding dean of the Xiang-Ya (Hunan-Yale) School of Medicine, a collaboration between the Hunan provincial government and the Yale-China Association. Dr. Yan also created several public health initiatives, including the establishment of the Hunan Red Cross and the Chinese Medical Association.
In the late 1920s, Dr. Yan was integral in planning an academic medical center in Shanghai, becoming the founding dean of what is now known as the Shanghai Medical College, Fudan University. He passed away in 1970, and by 1978, was lauded as a national hero for his contributions to the health of the nation.
