Late March marks one year since the first person in prison was known to die from COVID-19 on March 26, 2020. Since then, more than 2,700 people have been confirmed to lose their lives to the virus while living or working in jails, prisons, or detention centers in the U.S., and thousands more have perished from other causes in the unhealthy conditions of detention.
To mark a year of loss, on Saturday, March 27 we will hear from directly-impacted people who lost loved ones behind bars and honor the names of those who have died. The vigil will feature Cassandra Greer-Lee, Chanthon Bun, Page Dukes, Xavier Washington, Michelle Alexander, and others.
This event is hosted by Mourning Our Losses ( and co-hosted by Southern Center for Human Rights, Texas After Violence Project, UCLA Law COVID-19 Behind Bars Data Project, Yale Undergraduate Prison Project, Prison Music Project, and SEICHE Center for Health and Justice. Details for viewing will be provided at a later date.
