There has been a revolution in the production of data, and many possible answers to complex questions can be produced from these data with new AI technologies. Yet a black-box conversion of data to evidence may not be trusted by the public: incorrect results can be generated that lead to confusion and even harm.
In this Love Data Week keynote event, Dr. Julia Lane will provide an overview of a promising new approach to producing data called democratizing data, an approach that is grounded in developing open, community-driven, and tested standards. She will pay particular attention to the role of experts and digital libraries in the process and will illustrate with examples from her work on the impact of AI on job quality. Additional readings of interest include her book Democratizing Data, a special issue of the Harvard Data Science Review, and an essay on rethinking data and AI.
This presentation will be moderated by Kayla Shipp, Program Manager for the Computational Methods & Data Department at Yale University Library and is co-sponsored by the Yale Digital Ethics Center.
